“Toccata y misterio” is one of the early works by Esteban Benzecry, written in 1991 when he was 21 years old. The piece is dedicated to the Argentine cellist Sol Gabetta, who premiered it that same year in Buenos Aires in the Auditorio Nacional of the Radio Nacional de Argentina.

The work is structured in three parts, A-B-A, in which A is a toccata with rhythms reminiscent of the charcarera, an Argentine dance in ternary form of strong rhythmic force; and B is a melancholic melody, derived from the vidala, the typical gaucho song usually accompanied by a guitar. The next A section is not an exact repeat of the first, but rather a recreation of it in the style of the toccata.

La pieza está estructurada en 3 partes, A-B-A, en la cual A es una toccata con reminiscencias de la chacarera, danza ternaria argentina de gran fuerza rítmica; y B es una melodía melancólica derivada de la vidala, canción característica del gaucho que se acompaña con su guitarra. La segunda A no es una repetición textual de la primera parte, sino mas bien una recreación de la misma, regresando al estilo de toccata.
